More Than Just a Swing
Nothing breeds nostalgia more than the creak of a tire swing under a big shade tree. Many dads have their own such memories carved into their minds. But now, as a father, your kid’s laughter ringing out as you give a gentle push not only creates those same memories for your children, but adds sweet depth to your own. At Storm the Shores, we’re about forging memories that stick—for dads and kids. Why’s it a must? A tire swing isn’t just a backyard toy; it’s a dad’s tool for leadership, and family bonds. It’s a classic that delivers joy for pennies. It builds connection, teaches resilience, and beats any screen. A swing’s where stories start. Ready to make your backyard a legend?

The Heart of Dad-Kid Connection
A tire swing is more than rope and rubber—it’s a bridge between you and your kids, built on laughter and trust. Pushing your child as they soar, you’re not just playing; you’re etching memories that’ll outlast any store-bought gadget. The Institute for Family Studies notes, “Physical play with parents strengthens child attachment and emotional security.” Here are four ways that this kind of play will change your relationship with your children:
It’s a Memory Maker: Your kid won’t recall last week’s TV show, but they’ll never forget dad taking the time to push her on that creaky tire swing.
Physical Touch: Every push seems like a hug, and every giggle a strand in the growing bond. The moments when they feel your strong hands will build trust and act as small moments that say, “I’ve got you.”
Unplugged Fun: No screens, no Wi-Fi—just you, your kid, and a tire under an open sky. This is such a rarity for many families. Going outside of the ordinary is exciting! Tablets and screens keep kids quiet, but tire swings make them alive. The American Academy of Pediatrics exhorts, “Outdoor play enhances physical health and reduces screen-time dependency.” A swing gets kids moving, imagining, and connecting—everything a screen steals. You’ll see them invent games and laugh with friends, and even find their own fun in other ways.
Courage and Toughness: Nothing says summer like muddy knees and scraped elbows. These are just nature’s way of shaping kids to be tough and resilient.

A Backyard Project That Lasts Generations
Building a tire swing is cheap and easy, even to make a good one. Yet, that tire swing might outlast you. If it doesn’t, the legacy and memories it leaves behind surely will. From the DIY start to your son or daughter begging for one more push, they'll remember the time you spent with them twofold. Don’t miss that opportunity to spend just a few more minutes playing and bonding. After all, one of the most common regrets for men is that they didn’t spend enough time with their kids. For the price of a pizza, you craft memories, teach resilience, and pull your kids from screens to the backyard. Your kids will thank you when they’re pushing their own someday but the giggles along the way will seem like payment enough.
How To Make The Perfect Swing
1. Start by choosing a sturdy, healthy tree with a strong horizontal branch that’s at least 8 inches thick and 10–12 feet off the ground. Avoid any dead or cracked limbs.
2. Gather your materials: a tire (cleaned and drilled for drainage), a strong rope or chain rated for outdoor use and heavy loads, a carabiner or swivel hook, and a drill if needed.
3. Loop the rope or chain over the branch and secure it using a bowline or double figure-eight knot — or attach with a heavy-duty eye bolt for extra stability. This can be done by throwing hte rope or chain over the branch (tie something hefty to the end if you need some height or distance) or by using a ladder to get high enough.
4. Attach the tire evenly so it hangs level, and leave at least 12–18 inches between the tire and the ground.
5. Test it carefully with your weight before letting kids on. Besides, you'll have fun, too.
6. Take some time to push your kids on the swing!
For extra fun, paint the tire or add a soft rope grip. With proper setup, your swing will last for years of backyard memories.
